The Shape of the Earth: a Framework for Discussion
This an important discussion which cuts to the very core of Science.
Flat Earth vs Globe Earth
(NB: I used the term “Flat Earth” to refer to a collection of ideas relating to the shape and size of the earth, but also the age of the earth, the size, shape, and distance to the moon, sun, planets, stars, nature of orbits: helio- vs geo-centric, etc)
OK, I admit to having strong feelings about this topic. Frankly I am having trouble believing that this is a hotly debated subject in 2023, when we are all walking around with a virtual Library of Alexandria in our pockets.
I observe that when people are discussing this topic, quite rapidly, the discussion invariably seems to devolve quickly into name-calling, insults, ad hominum, personal attacks….
Both sides are claiming to have the science on their side.
The question is:
How can we resolve this?
Here are a few general topics to consider:
EPISTIMOLOGICAL: What is Proof?
Is proof objective, or subjective?
Under what conditions can we say something “has been shown to be true”?
How do we know what we think we know is really true?
Can we trust our own observations, and our own reason,
to both be free from bias?
PROCEDURAL
What framework of proof can BOTH SIDES agree upon to establish which position is correct?
Is the Scientific Method an appropriate tool for the investigation into astronomy, cosmology, and geophysics?
stated another way:Are there well-known limitations to the Scientific Method which rule it out as a tool of inquiry in this case?
That’s It!
Please leave your suggestions below as to how we can resolve this.
PLEASE for this post only, DO NOT ARGUE this question, either one side, or the other in the comments below.
PLEASE restrict your comments ONLY to your ideas about a FRAMEWORK by which both sides can have a meaningful dialog, and hopefully find a resolution to the question.
What is the FRAMEWORK for the resolution?
This is an EXTREMELY important question
…which cuts to the very Core of Science, and to helping us decide whether Science is a useful tool for investigating our world.
Thanks! I look forward to your comments.
Friends, OFF TOPIC comments will be deleted.
Please stay ON POINT to the questions I raised. Thank you.
Definition of terms and definitions to start with. Also, people who have different opinions about stuff like this might not be antagonistic enemies and this type of disagreement should not mean that people cannot work together for other shared goals.
Discussion about how the debate will be conducted, the rules, etc. should be discussed before hand.
